GLOSSARY

Ascendant : The Ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic on the eastern horizon at the time of birth, event or inquiry. It is described by the sign associated with the degree.

Ecliptic : The apparent paths of the planets across the sky, through the zodiac belt. It is divided into 360 degrees.

Grahas : Referring to cosmic entities or celestials. The term Graha describes one whom grasps or seizes. The Grahas grasp, seize or influence the subjects of the study. The Sun, the Moon and its nodes are not planets by definition. The term Grahas is synonymous with planetary beings.

Ketu : Moon’s south node

Moon’s Nodes : The Moon’s nodes are points in the Moon’s path along the ecliptic. When the Moon and the Sun are aligned at either node, eclipses occur. The orbit of the Moon around Earth is 5 degrees off the plane of Earth's equator. The point where the orbit crosses Earth's equator in a northward direction is called the North Node. Likewise where the orbit of the Moon crosses Earth's equator in a southward direction is called the South Node. The North Node has been named by the ancient Indian sages and called Rahu. The South Node is called Ketu. The nodes are always exactly opposite, 180 degrees from, each other The nodes motion is most often retrograde.

Nakshatra : Lunar manison - One of twenty-seven thirteen degree twenty minute divisions of the ecliptic belt that comprises the zodiac.

Navamsa : Ninth division harmonic chart of the birth chart.

Rahu : Moon’s north node

Rasi : Rasi (pronounced ra shee, accent on ra) is defined, a mass of stars or star group. Rasis corresponds to constellations.

Retrograde : The term is used to describe planets that appear to be moving backward, or against the normal counter clockwise rotation around the Sun. Outer planets, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn appear retrograde when Earth passes them in orbit around the Sun. Inner planets Mercury and Venus appear retrograde when they pass Earth. The Moon never appears retrograde.
