| Idrissa "Pape" Diatta "True knowledge is acquired by sharing"! This adgae is exemplified through authentic African and transcultural damce with Traditional Master Artist Idrissa "Pape" Diatta. Commonly referred to as "Pape" (pronounced "pop"). Idrissa was born in the village of Thionk-Essyl in Senegal West Africa. Idrissa's family lives in Batine Bah a segment of Thionk-Essyl. In Pape's own words it is "my village natal"". Idrissa and his family live the songs and dances of the Djolla tradition. Pape has taught danced and performed in Spain, France, the Netherlands, West Africa, and the United States in a course spanning over twenty-five years. From 1985 to 2000, Idrissa toured and performed with Les Ballet D'Afrique Noire and National Ballet of Senegal. Pape has performed as leading artist while performing at venues such as, the Kennedy Center and Eisenhower Theatre in Washington D.C., the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware, Pennsylvania State University, Raritan Valley Community College in Sommerville, New Jersey. In his current city of residence, Cleveland, Ohio, Idrissa has performed at the Cleveland Museum of Art with "Voices of the Drum", and numerous festivals, parades and school programs. Idrissa Diatta has instructed and choreographed dance at a variety of workshops, elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, communnity centers and events including, the Second Annual African World Festival and Workshops in Serengeti Detroit, Michigan, Denison University in Granvile, Ohio, Case Western University, Cleveland State University, Cuyhoga Community College, African American Museum of Cleveland, Ohio, Salvation Army, Ashe Cultural Center, the Dance Studio in Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights Middle School Collective Sekou Alkebulan, East High School, Daniel E. Morgan elementray, Wade Park elementary, and Kathrerine Tyler Community Center. Pape played the theatrical role of King Sundiata with the Madinka Epic Theatrical Company touring the United States in 2000. In 1999 Idrissa acted in the movie La Refuse D'Mandian (The Social Rejection of the Handicapped) with African American actor Danny Glover. The movie was filmed in Dakar, Senegal. Idrissa speaks French, Spanish, and English in addition to several West African languages, affording Idrissa the opportunity to communicate with divers peoples. |
